Former Titans QB Lands Head Coaching Job

The Tennessee Titans drafted LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. While a player chosen so late in the process is not expected to make an immediate impact, he played early in his career because the Titans’ quarterback room was an absolute mess under Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey.

Mettenberger played three NFL seasons from 2014-2016, the first two of which were with the Titans, but his professional career felt flat after a stint with the Steelers in 2016. Since his playing days ended, he has been coaching for various high school and college football programs but was just awarded his first head coaching gig on Tuesday at Father Ryan High School in Nashville, Tennessee.

After serving as the assistant coach at Father Ryan in 2021, Mettenberger re-joined the staff in the same capacity in 2024 after a two-year stint as an analyst with the Alabama Crimson Tide. The school announced on Tuesday that he would become the program’s next head coach, effective immediately. His NFL career was a bit underwhelming, as Mettenberger went 0-10 as a starter for the Titans.

But it appears that the Georgia native has found his footing in the coaching world, landing a head coaching job at the age of 33. Given his experience as both a player and coach at such a young age, it may only be a matter of time before Mettenberger finds himself back in the NFL ranks as a coach.
