Key Lawrence played multiple positions for the Sooners under two head coaches and on two defensive lines, but he always seemed to find himself around the football.

Lawrence, hailing from Nashville, played cornerback, free safety, strong safety, and even a bit of “Cheetah” during his time with the Sooners.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound athlete participated in 36 games in the Crimson and Cream, amassing a total of 149 tackles for Oklahoma. He consistently made his presence felt on the field, breaking up 12 passes, forcing six fumbles, and recording three interceptions while playing for the Sooners.
In addition to his football prowess, Lawrence excelled at basketball in high school. He played in 10 games as a true freshman for the Vols before transferring to Oklahoma, along with Tennessee teammates running back Eric Gray and offensive lineman Wanya Morris. At OU, then-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch struggled to determine Lawrence’s best position, but he was most effective at cornerback and safety, forcing three fumbles in 2021.
Though he continued to play multiple positions, Lawrence primarily settled into the safety role under Brent Venables in 2022 and 2023. He recorded a career-high 58 tackles in Venables’ first season and tied his career-high with four tackles for loss, along with two interceptions, in 2023.
