USC Trojans Yet Again Make Headlines with Major News
The USC Trojans will now get an early jump on preparation for the 2025 football season through spring practices. This is also the time of year when forgotten players, or “enigmas,” make a name for themselves all over again. One talented four-star signing is expected to make noise and vie for a starting position. Elijah Newby got called an exciting “enigma” player to watch by Chris Trevino of 247Sports Monday.
“One of the more exciting players on the roster is the former four-star signee Newby, who USC specifically opted to redshirt in 2024,” Trevino began. “Blessed with elite speed for his size at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Newby has a chance to be a dynamic sideline-to-sideline defender for defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn.”
The Connecticut prospect arrived to the Los Angeles region as the state’s No. 3 overall prospect by 247Sports. Trevino noted one movement USC made with Newby, though. “But there was eye-catching change for Newby at the end of the year after moving to defensive end for USC’s Las Vegas Bowl game,” Trevino shared.
“He did not see the field but was this a one-time move? Or a long-term change? There was also a picture this offseason with Newby hanging out with the defensive linemen, which added more intrigue for his future position.”
Trevino believes Newby will settle back at linebacker, yet added how “spring will offer a glimpse into the various ways Newby can be deployed on defense.”
Sounds like USC has a versatile defender fans may have forgotten about. Now he gets a chance to learn and absorb coaching from new linebackers coach Rob Ryan.
The longtime NFL assistant is one of the new hires from Lincoln Riley ahead of spring ball. Newby got projected to compete for the Will LB position (weakside linebacker) in January before Ryan’s hire.
