The Calgary Flames Prospects Prepare for the Young Stars Classic.
The Calgary Flames’ young prospects are gearing up for the upcoming Young Stars Classic, which is the official kickoff to the team’s hockey season. Before heading to Penticton, B.C. for the rookie tournament, the prospects will hit the ice in Calgary on Thursday at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park.
The on-ice sessions, starting at 10 a.m., will feature a talented group of goaltenders, including Waltteri Ignatjew, Matt Radomsky, and Connor Murphy, who will backstop the team against prospects from the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, and Vancouver Canucks.
On defense, the Flames’ group is highlighted by trade acquisition Hunter Brzustewicz and 2024 ninth-overall pick Zayne Parekh. Artem Grushnikov, Eric Jamieson, Henry Mews, Joni Jurmo, Etienne Morin, and Axel Hurtig round out the impressive blueline.
Offensively, the Flames’ top prospects include their second first-round pick, Matvei Gridin, as well as William Stromgren and Samuel Honzek, who could potentially earn time in the main training camp this month. The forward group will also feature players such as Lucas Ciona, Parker Bell, Sam Morton, Andrew Basha, Hunter Laing, Jacob Battaglia, Trevor Janicke, Jaden Lipinski, Luke Misa, David Silye, and Luke McNamara.
The Flames prospects will then head to Penticton to compete in the three-game Young Stars Tournament, starting on Friday the 13th against the Winnipeg Jets. They will also face off against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday and the host Vancouver Canucks on Monday.
Islanders Rookie Camp Begins Thursday.
The New York Islanders Prospects Gear Up for Rookie Camp
As the hockey season approaches, the New York Islanders’ young prospects are gearing up to hit the ice on Thursday for the start of rookie camp. While the team has not yet released an official roster, we have a good idea of who will be in attendance.
Unfortunately, the Islanders’ collegiate players, including Cole Eiserman, Kamil Bednarik, Danny Nelson, and Quinn Finley, will not be present as they are already at school preparing for their collegiate seasons.
Additionally, the team’s 2024 draft goalies, Marcus Gidlof and Dmitry Gamzin, are expected to be absent as they begin their seasons overseas in Sweden and the KHL, respectively. 2024 second-round pick Jesse Pulkkinen, who suffered a lower-body injury, is also not expected to participate, as he will be sidelined “for weeks.”
However, the Islanders will have some new faces at the camp. Marshall Warren, a Long Island native who spent three years at Boston College before finishing his college career at the University of Michigan, will be attending his first Islanders camp after signing with the Bridgeport Islanders at the end of last season. The 23-year-old signed a two-year entry-level deal this summer and participated in Matt Martin’s Hockey Academy in early August.
Another newcomer is left winger Alex Jefferies, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Jefferies, a Hobey Baker Finalist playing for Merrimack College, signed with the Bridgeport Islanders after his season ended and is expected to participate in the Islanders’ camp for the first time.
Finally, 19-year-old left winger Jesse Nurmi, the Islanders’ fourth-round pick in 2023, will be in attendance. Nurmi, who signed his three-year entry-level deal this summer, will return to the OHL’s London Knights after camp and play the 2024-25 season with them before turning pro for the 2025-26 season.
Islanders Fans, Gear Up! Training Camp is Just Around the Corner.
As the summer winds down and we inch closer to the start of the NHL season, Islanders fans have plenty to be excited about. The league has officially announced that training camps will open across the NHL on September 18th.
Now, before you get too eager, this initial date is typically reserved for player physicals and off-ice activities. But fear not, Islanders faithful – we expect our NHLers to take the ice the very next day, on September 19th.
And that’s not all! The Islanders have their first preseason game scheduled for September 22nd, as they’ll head to New Jersey to take on the Devils. Puck drop at The Rock is set for 7 PM ET.
Of course, we’re still waiting on the official rookie camp roster to be released. But you can be sure we’ll provide all the details as soon as that information becomes available. These young prospects will be looking to make a strong impression and earn their spots on the big club.
So mark those calendars, Isles fans. Training camp is just around the corner, and the road to the 2024-25 season is about to kick into high gear. Let’s go Islanders!
