Yankees will have to trade top outfield prospect to acquire White Sox ace

The New York Yankees will likely need to spend a significant amount to acquire top talent before the deadline, and while it’s not unexpected, they may pursue high-profile players. Garrett Crochet, a standout pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, has earned his first All-Star team selection due to his outstanding performance in the American League, resulting in a very high asking price.

According to Bob Nightengale, Chicago is unwavering in their demand for Spencer Jones as part of any deal for Crochet, suggesting that the Yankees may be exploring this option. Previous reports by Jon Heyman of the New York Post indicated that the Yankees have a strong interest in the young left-handed pitcher, recognizing the significant impact he could have on their rotation if they are successful in acquiring him.

To acquire Garrett Crochet, the Yankees would need to include Spencer Jones in the deal

Spencer Jones has experienced some challenges during his time in Double-A, and despite his relative youth compared to most prospects, there are reservations about his high swing-and-miss rates.

The 6’6 outfielder has achieved a 104 wRC+ and hit 10 home runs in 73 Double-A games, but his strikingly high 37.1% strikeout rate, even higher than last season, raises concerns. While Jones is still adjusting to the tougher competition in the Eastern League, the Chicago White Sox might have a strong interest in him, potentially leaving the Yankees with little choice.

On the other hand, Garrett Crochet possesses all the qualities of a top-tier pitcher, the kind who can profoundly impact postseason games with his formidable fastball-cutter combination. Across 20 starts, the left-hander has maintained a 3.02 ERA and an impressive 35.2% strikeout rate, offering the exact type of strikeout potential that the Yankees greatly lack. Moreover, he wouldn’t join as a reliever but rather as one of the Yankees’ premier starters, rightfully so due to his outstanding performance throughout the season.

The underlying statistics indicate that Crochet’s performance is poised to improve. Although being a two-pitch pitcher is typically seen as a limitation for pitching deep into games, his exceptional pitching abilities often compensate for this.

As he pitches deeper into games, his performance tends to elevate, potentially forming the most formidable top three in baseball alongside Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil.It remains to be seen if there will be any progress regarding a potential deal, but it appears that the Chicago White Sox have a strong preference for Spencer Jones based on their persistence.
