Falcons release tight end Tucker Fisk has been classified as injured.

The organization needed to make room on the roster because wide receivers Daylen Baldwin and Odieu Hiliare had recently signed. One of the team’s few tight ends, Tucker Fisk, was released after being waived with an injury designation.

Over the last two seasons, Fisk, 25, has been a regular member of the Falcons practice squad. He has had a limited role during gamedays and has one nine-yard reception. Given his experience as an offensive lineman at Stanford, he presents an intriguing blocking option when healthy, and at just twenty-one, he ought to receive some playing time. No matter where he ends up, we’ll send him our best wishes.

As Fisk was anticipated to be among three players who were vying for playing time at tight end, the Falcons now have a smaller depth chart at the position and a more clear picture going ahead. With Fisk no longer in the picture and rookie undrafted free agent Austin Stogner now more likely to be fighting for a spot on the practice squad, the competition now centers on former Falcons draft pick John FitzPatrick and 49ers import Ross Dwelley. FitzPatrick is a clearly superior blocking option, but Dwelley offers special teams value and is a better (if not exceptional) pass-catching option at this point in their careers. Whether Dwelley or FitzPatrick ends up with that job will probably depend on what the Falcons value from their third tight end.
