Exclusive Five Reasons Every Purdue Boilermakers Should be Proud

You may recall that a few weeks ago, my wise colleague BoilerUp89 posted an excellent piece that showcased the numerous achievements the Indiana Hoosiers had made in football and basketball over the last few decades. It was really enjoyable. Taking a stroll down memory road while listening to the hits that many Purdue supporters must have enjoyed perusing.

To be honest, being anĀ  purdue supporter, I wasn’t that bothered by it. Like the most of his writings, I felt it was beautifully written. It was cute, maybe the best way to describe it.

I started to wonder, what exactly had the Purdue Boilermakers accomplished for me recently. What is the current state of the Black and Gold athletic department? I thought you may find some fast facts interesting, so I pulled them.

1. Purdue “claims” five national championships in sport

It may sound awkward to state, but Purdue “claims” five national championships in sports. Whoa, talk about dusty banners: Men’s Basketball in 1932; Men’s Golf in 1961; Women’s Basketball in 1999; Women’s Golf in 2010; and Cheerleading in 2018. That’s five championships, I suppose. Though we’ll give it to them, men’s basketball truly didn’t participate in a tournament. Would you not look at that? Let’s take a peek at the men’s football team at Indiana. Eight championships? Whoa. Fantastic.

2. Purdue has won 31 National Championships for Individuals

That is really impressive. Since Orval Matin and the 800 Yard Run (which is referred to as a “run” on the Purdue website rather than a “dash”) won the team’s first individual national championship in 1930, Purdue has won 31 of them. I do not wish to disparage those particular winners. It’s difficult to win a national title in any sport, whether it be solo or team. It would never occur to me to mention that Indiana has 163 individual titles. I would never, ever do it.

In addition, I would like to mention that Indiana Women’s Tennis won a women’s tennis championship in 1982 and that its cheerleading squad has won six more championships, for a total of 31 team titles. That’s not what I would do.

3.Purdue Basketball Has Overcome The Setback

I’ll give you guys a tip of the hat. Yes, you were able to attend a major sport’s national championship game! This season’s Boilers basketball team deserves to be thoroughly defeated in their pursuit of a national championship. Bravo to them! It follows a run of extremely tragic and heartbreaking post-season events. Still, I suppose, it’s a little depressing. The only programme that has failed as the top seed in the first round and hasn’t won the national championship the following year is Purdue. How depressing.

Not to mention the heartaches Purdue basketball has suffered in the tournament against formidable opponents. Purdue appears to always run into a buzzsaw of a squad that they are unable to compete with. Whether it was the formidable Saint Peter’s, who lost to UNC in 2022 after being seeded 20 to 8, the formidable North Texas, who declared in 2021 that “I’m not even going to google their mascot,” or the formidable Little Rock, who declared in 2016 that “Also not looking it ups.” Purdue just seems to consistently play these juggernaut teams. Really, it’s insane. Not to mention the pain Virginia endured in 2019 AND the incident when Isaac Haas was injured. and the injury to Robbie Hummel.

However, it appears that you guys have overcome the obstacle at last! Congratulations on your near-banner!

4-Purdue Football Is All Right

Since we’re talking about it, Purdue football is unquestionably among the top teams in the B1G, don’t you think? They’re still living off of Joe Tiller’s legacy, really. If you look closely, you can actually see that Jeff Brohm actually gave up on Purdue in order to return home, not because Purdue football couldn’t compete in the NIL and the divisions were expected to finish sooner rather than later.

Would you, however, consider that? Strange fact: Purdue and Indiana have attended the same number of bowl games since 2013. While Purdue has won two of its bowl games and did not play in a bowl game when the clock ran in the second half, Indiana has lost theirs in heartbreaking ways each time. That was completely untrue. Nevertheless, Ryan Walters, the second-year coach, is undoubtedly ready for the upcoming football schedule. You guys ought to succeed!

5-Purdue has seven Governor’s Cup victories

For those who don’t know, the Governors Cup, also called the Crimson and Gold Cup, was established in 2001 to honour the Hoosier and Boilermaker rivalry. Consider it as a “Cup for All Sports.” There are points up for grabs for the cup in every sporting event between the two schools. You might be surprised to learn that Purdue has won seven Governor’s Cup titles. That is really impressive. That’s nearly as many as the twelve that Indiana has won, even after accounting for the two years in which the colleges tied for the trophy.
