Willie Fritz to “Unveil exciting changes” to the Cougars offense

Houston Cougars’ head football coach Willie Fritz is injecting enthusiasm into the program and instigating measures to propel the team towards success once more. Following Houston’s debut season in the Big 12, significant changes were imperative within the coaching staff. Fans are eagerly embracing Fritz’s early initiatives as he orchestrates a cultural transformation to align with the standards emblematic of Houston.

Analyzing the Cougars’ rushing performance from the previous season, dual-threat quarterback Donovan Smith emerged as the team’s second-highest rusher. In the Big 12 rankings, they secured the 12th spot, averaging 118.7 yards per game.

To make a substantial impact this season, the Cougars must bolster certain positions with additional resources, particularly in the running back department. Fritz is seeking a running back who displays a decisive north-south running style, capable of barreling through the defensive line to secure crucial yards for successful first downs without leaving any room for doubt.

Reflecting on a critical moment from last season, Fritz likely revisited Houston’s game against the No. 8 Texas team, where Stacy Sneed was denied what seemed like a first down on a 3rd and 1 attempt with 1:57 remaining and the game tied at 24. This denial by the officials paved the way for Texas to execute a decisive game-winning drive, maintaining their playoff aspirations alive.

Following that devastating defeat, Fritz shifted his focus towards enhancing his running back corps with a special addition to the backfield. The former Tulane coach led a rushing offense in the American Athletic Conference that ranked 8th in ground yardage last season, averaging 155.1 yards per game.

The introduction of J’Marion Burnette to the Cougars’ backfield, alongside established players like Stacy Sneed, Parker Jenkins, Tony Mathis Jr (a transfer from West Virginia), DJ Butler, Re’Shaun Sandford II, Sherman Smith, and Steve Polk, creates a potent committee of running backs.

Burnette, a freshman hailing from Andalusia High School in Alabama and a former four-star recruit, brings a dynamic and elusive presence to the team, underpinned by his fierce playing style.

If Coach Fritz sought a power back capable of outpacing defenders in open spaces to complement the existing talent in the Cougars’ running back stable, Burnette perfectly fits the bill. His capacity to absorb hits and persist through tackles showcases his resilience and determination beyond initial contact.

Cougars supporters may witness the emergence of this young talent in the running back rotation in the upcoming season, potentially contributing significantly towards securing victories against Big 12 opponents.
