Eagles owner’s honest comments about Nick Sirianni’s job security raise eyebrows

During the NFL owners meetings, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie spoke with reporters and had the chance to discuss head coach Nick Sirianni’s future with the team after the 2024 season. Reports from Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia indicate that Lurie did not provide any assurances about what might transpire the following winter.

“Every coach is in a high-pressure situation,” Lurie explained. “Nick has had a spectacular three seasons. He’s shown all the ingredients to have outstanding success. I’m just looking forward to it. No coach is not feeling pressure to perform. That’s the way it is in the National Football League. I’m just really excited about this season and our roster development.”

In January, questions emerged about Sirianni’s position after the Eagles, previously at 10-1, slipped to 11-6 and second place in the NFC East. The team’s playoff hopes took a hit with a disappointing 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Lurie ultimately decided to keep Sirianni on board.

NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned in January that there was speculation in certain league circles about the Eagles showing interest in former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick after their playoff exit. However, it was reported that Belichick did not reciprocate as he was engaged in discussions with the Atlanta Falcons during that period.

There is speculation that the Eagles might consider reaching out to Belichick next January if Sirianni’s performance in the 2024 season falters.

Lurie emphasized that he did not let recent events sway his choice to retain Sirianni, despite the disheartening end to the previous season.

“We go through a very, very intensive process after every single season,” Lurie insisted. “…Take a very hard look at exactly what the entire season looked at, what the entire history has been over the last few years for our organization, for our team and listen.”

Sirianni took on the Eagles head coaching role in January 2021 and led the team to playoff appearances in all three of his seasons, culminating in a win in the NFC Championship Game in January 2023 before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. His track record explains why he was given another chance this offseason, but his position may now be more precarious compared to November 2023 when Belichick was with the Patriots.
