Former NL MVP Expected to Change Teams This Offseason
A prominent MLB veteran may have played his last game for the St. Louis Cardinals. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are likely to part ways with seven-time All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this offseason. His contract is nearing its end, and the Cardinals are preparing for a “reset” in 2025, as noted by Woo.
At 37 years old, Goldschmidt has been with the Cardinals since being traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks before the 2019 MLB season. Over his six seasons in St. Louis, he had a successful tenure, winning NL MVP in 2022, along with a Silver Slugger Award and a Gold Glove.
However, despite hitting 22 home runs and driving in 64 RBIs, Goldschmidt had an overall disappointing year in 2024, posting career lows of a .245 batting average and a .713 OPS, indicating a decline after 14 MLB seasons.
The Cardinals ended the season with a mediocrity of 83-79 (.512), missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year. While the Cardinals benefited significantly from the Goldschmidt trade compared to the Diamondbacks, it appears that it’s finally time for the team to move on as well.
