Draft: Canadian team gets 26th overall pick.
That concludes the official second round of the playoffs.
After the Canucks were eliminated last night (do they realize that shootouts are permitted in the NHL? ), the Final Four playoff picture is now complete.
The Oilers and Stars will play in the West. Additionally, a series between the Rangers and the Panthers is taking place in the East. I see the Rangers in six and the Stars in six.
The result of the series between the two Canadian clubs was intriguing to watch for the Habs. It was the final version of the document, after all.
An Oilers victory in the series means the Habs would receive the 26th pick in the auction, as my colleague Mathis Therrien clarified over the weekend. Wins for the Canucks meant the 27th pick.
Also, Kent Hughes will eventually receive the 26th pick because Edmonton prevailed. In exchange for Sean Monahan, Winnipeg received a first-round selection.
With the 26th overall pick is Filip Mesar.
The 12 teams from the 17th to the 28th picks in the playoff draft who were eliminated in the first two rounds. All clubs, with the exception of one division champion, are ranked according to overall rankings.
Champions of the division who fall short in the opening two rounds are selected higher in the 28th-ranked corner.
Because the Oilers placed second and the Canucks won their division, the Habs were undecided on whether to select 26th or 27th overall.
The four teams that are still in the playoffs, the Hurricanes (third overall in the season), and the division-winning Canucks are the only teams behind Winnipeg (fourth overall in the season) for the draft.
This year, seven clubs traded their first pick.
14th: The Penguins’ choice is with the Sharks.
20th: The Lightning’s pick is with the Blackhawks.
Senators choose Bruins on the 25th
26: Jets are chosen by the Canadiens
28th: Canucks lose to Flames
From 29 to 32: Ducks select the Oilers, Flyers select the Panthers.
The Canadiens will be able to draft a prospect, like Sacha Boisvert, or trade their pick for reinforcements, like Alex Newhook did last year.
But keep in mind that the Habs won’t draft until the end of the second round, or after the top-5 has been determined, if they trade their 26th pick. Christian Dvorak, the Habs’ second-round selection, was dealt in 2021, but the team now owns Artturi Lehkonen, the Avalanche’s pick, in the second round.
– Since the early 2000s, the four surviving clubs have not taken home the Stanley Cup. All of them have, nevertheless, advanced to the Final over the previous twenty years or so.
