Dr. Carey Price: Habs goaltender to receive honorary degree

Carey Price has seen a lot of doctors over the course of his career, and now he’s going to become one — at least honorarily.

Montreal Canadiens Carey Price waves to the Bell Centre fans as he joins his team-mates following their last game of the season against the Boston Bruins in Montreal Thursday April 13, 2023.

At its convocation ceremony at the end of this month, the University of Northern British Columbia announced on Wednesday that he will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

Speaking during the event will be the goalie for the Montreal Canadiens, whose mother is a UNBC alumni and who was raised in British Columbia.

“I want to shine a light on all the possibilities and pathways open to young people in Anahim Lake and across the country by sharing my journey and experiences,” Price stated in a statement.

“This honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UNBC is a testament to the unforeseen opportunities that present themselves and the rewarding ways that community service pays off.”

In 2021, Price led the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup final and had surgery on his knee. After the 2021–22 season ended, he participated in five games and hasn’t appeared in any more.

In September of last year, he added, “To be honest, on a daily basis I feel really good.” “However, doing specific exercises consistently serves as a very good reminder that my knee isn’t strong enough to withstand the demands of a full season of play.”

With two seasons remaining on his eight-year, US$84 million contract, the 36-year-old is still with the Montreal Canadiens. (His salary is not deducted from the team cap because he has been on long-term injured reserve for the past two years.)

Last June, he and his family relocated back to British Columbia from their residence in Montreal. The South Shore land just went for $1.52 million.
