As potential destinations for free agent first baseman Pete Alonso dwindle, the New York Mets appear to be the slugger’s most obvious fit for 2025 and beyond.
While the San Francisco Giants have been floated as a potential threat to steal Alonso from the Mets, could the Seattle Mariners be another one? Seattle’s pitching staff was among baseball’s best in 2024. However, a lack of consistent offense led to the club posting an 85-77 record. They finished 3 1/2 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West and one game out of the final AL Wild Card spot.
An infusion of offense from an external source is needed for the Mariners if they want to get over the hump and back into the postseason.Jomboy Media’s Trevor Plouffe is predicting Seattle will swoop in and ink Alonso to a three-year, $90 million deal. “We’re looking at this Seattle Mariners team, and obviously we know everything about their pitching staff,” Plouffe said.
“But they’ve needed offense for many years…. (Alonso is) instant offense.” “I just think at that rate, three years is not a long term. I think he’s going to be productive for those three years.
Why not, Seattle?” According to former big leaguer Carlos Baerga, the Mets have offered their homegrown slugger a three-year, $90 million pact with multiple opt-outs included. If Alonso has similar offers on the table from the Mets and other teams, one would imagine his preference is to stay in Queens. Signing with a new team this winter is certainly within his range of outcomes, especially as he continues to linger on the open market.
But if the Mariners want to convince the Polar Bear to ditch New York, they’ll probably have to offer a deal that surpasses the $100 million mark.
