The New York Yankees lost the bidding war for superstar Juan Soto and must find other ways to retool their roster this offseason. Fortunately for the Yankees, plenty of top free agents are available, so not all hope is lost for 2025. However, where the Bronx Bombers will pivot following Soto’s historic signing Sunday night remains a mystery.
Perhaps the Yankees will complete a blockbuster trade for one of the league’s most talented third basemen. “Though he doesn’t anticipate a trade being done before the conclusion of the Winter Meetings, (John) Mozeliak said the blockbuster news of Juan Soto agreeing to sign with the New York Mets on Sunday should help move the market,” The Athletic’s Katie Woo reported Monday.
“Further clarity about Arenado’s future should be imminent. At least one team involved in the Soto bidding – the New York Yankees – has expressed interest in Arenado, according to a league source, though it is unclear at this time if the Yankees are one of Arenado’s approved teams.” Arenado signed an eight-year $260 million deal with the Colorado Rockies in 2019 before being traded to the Cardinals in 2021.
The five-time Silver Slugger requested to be moved in hopes of helping St. Louis win its 12th World Series title. With the Cardinals rebuilding, Arenado’s looking for a way out — somewhere that’ll give him the chance to add World Series champion to his Hall of Fame-caliber resume.
Given his high price tag — $74 million remaining on his contract — and lackluster 2024 stats, the Yankees would likely not have to sacrifice much to trade for Arenado. The six-time Platinum Glove defender has a no-trade clause in his contract, so a deal between St. Louis and New York won’t occur if he doesn’t want to join the Yankees.
However, if Arenado aims to win a championship, joining the 27-time World Series champions could get him there. More MLB: Ex-Yankees’ Luis Severino Signs $67 Million Deal With Surprise AL West Contender – Newsweek.
