Dodgers targeting Chicago high-upside outfielder in blockbuster trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers are eyeing another right-handed bat as they look to fill the potential void left by Teoscar Hernandez next season. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers are exploring the possibility of acquiring Luis Robert Jr., the star center fielder from the Chicago White Sox (h/t B/R Walk-Off).

Hernandez will be a free agent this winter, which puts the Dodgers in a tricky situation. He played a pivotal role in helping the Dodgers clinch the 2024 World Series, and losing him could significantly impact both their batting lineup—particularly in the cleanup spot—and their defense in the left and right field. As the offseason unfolds, the Dodgers’ pursuit of Robert highlights their commitment to maintaining a strong roster for the upcoming season.

Robert Jr. could replace Teoscar Hernandez on Dodgers

Acquiring Luis Robert Jr. could indeed cushion the impact of Teoscar Hernandez’s potential departure from the Dodgers. Although Robert had a challenging 2024 season, missing 62 games and posting a modest slash line of .224/.278/.379 with 14 home runs and 35 RBIs, his previous performance indicates his true potential. In 2023, he showcased his talent as an All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, with a slash line of .264/.315/.542 and an .857 OPS. His overall average from 2021 to 2023 was also impressive, reflecting similar offensive capabilities to Hernandez’s .272/.339/.501 and .840 OPS from last season.

While there might be a dip in RBIs if Robert is brought in, his elite defensive skills would be a significant advantage for the Dodgers. At just 27 years old, Robert is recognized as one of the top defenders in baseball, having won a Gold Glove Award in 2020 and posting a remarkable .992 fielding percentage last season with 254 putouts and just two errors.

Robert Jr. is due for $15 million next season with the White Sox. He has $20 million club options for both the 2026 and 2027 MLB campaigns before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2028. He’d come at a similar price as Hernandez, who is coming off of a one-year, $23.5 million contract with the Dodgers. Robert Jr. is a major name to watch as the Dodgers look to round out their star-studded roster this winter for a shot at back-to-back World Series crowns next season.
