Key Star Released By Bucs After Signing Free-Agent Contract

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly reached an agreement with linebacker Randy Gregory and plan to release him, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Gregory filed a lawsuit against the NFL and his former team, the Denver Broncos, alleging discrimination in June. He has not attended training camp and has missed two preseason games.

During his two years with the Broncos, Gregory was fined $532,500 for using the drug dronabinol, which contains THC, to manage disabilities. He claims he was prescribed this medication for social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, but the NFL denied his requests for accommodations.

In his lawsuit, Gregory stated that both the Broncos and the NFL prohibited him from using the drug during non-work hours and later rejected his request for a therapeutic use exemption. Although the league no longer suspends players for THC use, it remains a banned substance subject to fines.

Now, the six-year veteran is looking to find a new team in free agency before the season begins. He started the 2023 season with the Broncos before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he contributed to the team’s Super Bowl run.

Last season, Gregory recorded 20 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one pass deflection.
