Detroit Tigers And Manager A.J. Hinch Announced Another Huge Development following Javier Báez and Spencer Torkelson
The Detroit Tigers are off to an impressive start this season, thanks in large part to a much-improved offense.
Last year, their postseason push was driven by elite pitching. With Tarik Skubal anchoring the rotation and manager A.J. Hinch skillfully managing the bullpen, the Tigers found ways to win despite inconsistent run production. Offensive struggles were a persistent concern.
This season, the offense has taken a notable step forward. Even though the roster didn’t undergo major changes, several players have bounced back, and key members of the young core have taken noticeable strides.
One winter addition, in particular, has made a major difference—Gleyber Torres.
Jeff Passan of ESPN recently highlighted Torres’ impact on the Tigers’ lineup, noting:
“If there’s one player whose skills differ from his teammates’ and set the table, it’s second baseman Gleyber Torres. Operating on a one-year deal, Torres has been the Tigers’ most consistent hitter this season, getting on base at a .377 clip and walking more than he strikes out.”
While multiple players have stepped up, including All-Star outfielder Riley Greene—who has solidified himself as one of MLB’s top young stars—the steady presence of Torres has been critical.
Javier Báez and Spencer Torkelson have also delivered strong performances, but Torres arguably stands out as the most important bat in the lineup. He leads the team in both batting average and on-base percentage and has evolved into an excellent leadoff hitter.

With the Yankees, Torres consistently hit for average, but this season he’s shown more patience at the plate. At age 28, he’s already drawn 34 walks in 60 games—putting him on pace for a career high.
Torres’ ability to set the tone offensively has played a major role in Detroit’s turnaround. And while there may still be questions about whether some players can maintain their current pace, there’s no denying that this lineup is vastly improved—with Gleyber Torres leading the charge.
