The Detroit Red Wings sign super talented 23-year-old defender to a seven-year, $ 8,550,000 contract

The Detroit Red Wings have officially signed Moritz Seider to a seven-year,  59.85 million contract extension. This contract provides Seider with an average annual value(AAV) of 8,550,000 through the 2030-31 season, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Last season, the 23-year-old recorded nine goals and 33 assists for 42 points in 82 games, ranking second among Red Wings defenders, just behind Shayne Gostisbehere.

Seider, who was selected No. 6 overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, is entering his fourth year with Detroit. He made his NHL debut in 2021-22, scoring seven goals and 43 assists for 50 points in 82 games, and won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Top Rookie, becoming the first German-born player to achieve this honor and the first Red Wing since Roger Crozier in 1964-65.

Throughout his time in Detroit, the native of Zell, Germany has accumulated 21 goals and 113 assists for a total of 134 points in 246 games.

Before joining the NHL, Seider played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Rögle BK, where he scored 28 points in 41 games and earned the title of SHL Defenseman of the Year. He also competed in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with Adler Mannheim, winning the DEL Championship and being named the DEL Rookie of the Year.

With his new contract signed, it’s noteworthy that captain Dylan Larkin’s AAV will continue to be the highest on the Red Wings, at ** $ 8.7 million**.

The Detroit Red Wings will open their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 10, marking the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
