Detroit Red Wings sign Rated Star to a seven-year, $8,550,000 contract

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that they have signed Moritz Seider to a seven-year, $59.85 million contract extension.

The contract will pay Seider $8,550,000 on an average annual value (AAV) through the 2030-31 season when he will become an unrestricted free agent.

The 23-year-old recorded nine goals and 33 assists for a total of 42 points in 82 games last season, placing him second among Red Wings defenders, just behind Shayne Gostisbehere.

Seider is entering his fourth season with Detroit after being selected sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season, where he scored seven goals and provided 43 assists for 50 points in 82 games, earning the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Top Rookie. He became the first German-born player to win the Calder and the first Red Wing to receive the award since Roger Crozier in 1964-65.

In his three years with the Red Wings, the Zell, Germany native has accumulated 21 goals and 113 assists for 134 points in 246 games.

Before his NHL debut, Seider played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Rögle BK, where he recorded 28 points in 41 games and was named the SHL Defenseman of the Year. He also played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with Adler Mannheim, winning the DEL Championship and being named the DEL Rookie of the Year in the same season.

With Seider’s new contract now finalized, it’s noteworthy that captain Dylan Larkin’s average annual value (AAV) will remain the highest on the team at $8.7 million.

Detroit will open their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10, kicking off the 2024-25 season.
