“3 letters outweigh 4.” This surprising statement particularly rings true considering the four letters refer to Duke. It’s hard to believe it when faced with the power of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness), yet it’s the reality. For skeptics, “get a grip on Cooper Flagg being the poster boy for New Balance,” a 5-star prospect once expected to be Nike’s next star after joining Duke, a historically Nike-affiliated school. Even months later, many remain astonished by Flagg’s choice. However, prominent basketball analyst John Fanta stepped in to clarify the reasoning behind the 17-year-old’s decision.
The discussion about the evolving landscape of college athletics highlighted Flagg’s partnership with New Balance during a recent ESPN debate. Fanta commented, “This is the climate of the sport.” He emphasized that Flagg deserves his financial opportunities, stating: “He deserves his money, he deserves his endorsement. He deserves it all.” In August, Flagg signed a multi-year contract with the $ 6.5 billion brand, a move that many attribute to his upbringing near their manufacturing facilities in Newport, Maine. Yet, the headquarters of Nike is not far away, underscoring the brand’s significant presence.
Fanta elaborated, saying, “New Balance put out the very best offer for him.” He pointed out that Duke cannot enforce Nike policies on Flagg due to the current lack of regulations in college sports. He labeled college basketball as an “auction sport,” indicating that the absence of rules frees Flagg from Duke’s restrictions. His impressive skills make him a sought-after player, with various programs eager to ally with the notable Duke prospect.
In a notable shift, Flagg distanced himself from Rod Wave Elite (RWE), an organization known for its elite players, including those like Rutgers’ Dylan Harper and UNC’s Ian Jackson. RWE’s founder, Cam Wilder, expressed disappointment about his failed attempts to recruit Flagg, stating, “Everybody asks why Coop never played. You don’t think we tried, ladies and gentlemen? We tried.” He recounted efforts to contact Flagg, only to face barriers every time.
After finally reaching Flagg, Wilder was disappointed to learn, “They’re not going to let me.” This indicated that the situation was unlikely to change, leaving him resigned to the outcome.
In the view of many, Cooper Flagg is “a star in the making,” and his supporters believe he can live up to the expectations surrounding his burgeoning career. Undoubtedly, greater opportunities await him in the future.
