Danny Sprinkle and the Huskies Dealt With Unexpected News
Washington forward Tyler Harris is entering the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. He will have 2 years of eligibility remaining at his next stop and is the 6th Husky scholarship player to announce plans to transfer joining G Jase Butler, G Mekhi Mason, F Christian King, F Wilhelm Breidenbach, and C KC Ibekwe.

The 6’8 Harris transferred to Washington from Portland last offseason. He was one of the few bright spots on the team with a breakout shooting season in which he finished 2nd in the country making 49.5% of his 3-point attempts. Overall, Harris averaged 11.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game for Washington while starting 27 games. He averaged fewer points and rebounds than as a true freshman at Portland but while playing 3 fewer minutes against a much tougher schedule.
Harris had projected as one of the potential building blocks for Coach Sprinkle as he hopes to make a leap in year two as the head of the Huskies. Harris was obviously effective from deep but also showed off a strong mid-range game which resulted in a true shooting percentage of nearly 60%.
That isn’t to say that Harris is a perfect player. He finished the year with a 2.5% assist rate which was one of the lowest in the country for someone who took as many shots as he did. That was only ahead of Franck Kepnang (who had 0 assists) on the Washington roster but Harris played nearly 700 more minutes. Some of the +/- numbers suggested that Harris’ shooting overstated his impact. Evanmiya’s BPR stat accounts for possession-by-possession team performance while a player is on the court vs. on the bench adjusted by opposing players. Harris finished 9th of 11 UW players who played at least 200 possessions ahead of just Wilhelm Breidenbach and Tyree Ihenacho.
Still, players with Harris’ length and shooting ability are coveted and Washington had one on the roster with 2 years of eligibility left. You would hope that a good coach could develop him to help raise Harris’ hoops IQ and put him in positions to succeed. We won’t get to find out whether Sprinkle would have been able to do that long-term.
