Dabo Swinney made honest admission following Clemson NCAA Tournament Loss to McNeese State
The 2025 Men’s NCAA Tournament hasn’t seen many upsets, which makes Clemson’s loss to McNeese State in the first round particularly striking.
Prior to the game, there was significant buzz surrounding both teams. Brad Brownell was in the process of finalizing a long-term contract extension with the Tigers, putting to rest speculation about other coaching positions. Meanwhile, Will Wade, head coach of McNeese, was rumored to be the next head coach at NC State after agreeing to a deal with the Wolfpack.
This seemed to favor Clemson; however, the game unfolded quite differently on the court.
The Tigers struggled offensively, especially in the first half and much of the second, requiring a substantial late rally just to make the contest competitive.
It’s a disappointing conclusion for this Clemson team, which achieved so much during the regular season. Dabo Swinney, the head football coach, wants to ensure that their accomplishments are not overlooked.
“I’ve been here for 23 years and witnessed 23 basketball seasons. What this team achieved this year is incredible. It should be celebrated,” he stated, according to Jon Blau of The Post and Courier.
They finished the season with 27 wins, the highest in the program’s history. While this is an achievement worth celebrating, this Tigers team may not be remembered as fondly as last year’s squad, which made a memorable run to the Elite Eight.
Whether this perception is justified or not, it’s the current reality. Still, Swinney acknowledges the difficulty of winning a championship and believes that not securing a title doesn’t equate to a failed season.
“I know everyone aims to win it all and only remembers the last game, but we must not forget what they accomplished. It was truly special to witness,” he remarked.
While Swinney offers perspective on their achievements, the pain of this loss still lingers
