The Cubs and third-base coach Willie Harris are mutually parting ways, according to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score on X. Levine describes the separation as amicable, noting that Harris is open to other coaching positions.
Harris, 46, played in the majors from 2001 to 2012, representing teams like the Orioles, White Sox, Red Sox, Nationals, Mets, and Reds. After retiring as a player, he transitioned into coaching, spending time in the minors before being hired by the Cubs as third-base coach for the 2021 season, working alongside manager David Ross.
With Craig Counsell taking over as the Cubs’ manager in 2024 and inheriting Mike Napoli as first-base coach, Harris remained at third. Recent reports indicated that Napoli and some other coaches would not be returning, adding to the Cubs’ coaching vacancies.
In August, Scott Merkin of MLB.com discussed the managerial position with Harris regarding the White Sox, following Pedro Grifol‘s firing. While Harris expressed interest in the White Sox’s managerial role, it remains uncertain if that interest is reciprocated.
“I would absolutely love it if they showed interest in me being the leader of this organization, this team,” Harris said. “But I also understand how it goes. It’s a waiting process. If they call, great, I’ll be ready. I’ll be prepared.”
