The Chicago Cubs made an offseason splash on Friday.
The Cubs acquired all-star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros for prospects and pitching. The Cubs announced the trade late Friday afternoon.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the deal was completed. Tucker was the AL RBI and triples leader in 2023. In the 2024 season, Tucker batted .289, hit 23 home runs and drove in 49 runs.
In his career, Tucker has won both Sliver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards.
Acquiring Tucker didn’t come without a price, though. The Cubs are reportedly sending infielder Isaac Paredes, third base prospect and 2024 MLB Draft pick Cam Smith and right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski to the Astros.
Last season, Tucker was limited to just 78 games with a shin injury. However, in his seven seasons with the Astros Tucker has a career .870 OPS. It’s clearly one of the marquee moves the Cubs have needed to make, and it might not be the last.
With the Tucker deal having gone through, the Cubs are reportedly shopping outfielder Cody Bellinger, too. Rumors have circulated that once the Tucker deal was finalized, the Cubs could then trade Bellinger to the New York Yankees.
The Yankees are in need of a left-handed bat after losing the Juan Soto sweepstakes, as Soto departed for the Mets on a record-setting contract.
