The Winnipeg Jets are eyeing a potential trade for Nazem Kadri, who is currently in the third season of a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Calgary Flames. Unlike the typical rental players available at the trade deadline, Kadri could provide a longer-term solution for the Jets. At 33 years old, he has previously been on Winnipeg’s radar, with the Jets showing interest before he was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Colorado Avalanche.
Kadri’s experience and skill set could be just what the Jets need to break free from their recent playoff struggles. He played a pivotal role in the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup victory, showcasing his blend of talent, grit, and championship experience.
However, the Flames are currently in a rebuilding phase. While Elliotte Friedman has reported that Calgary isn’t looking to make any more moves this summer, the situation could change if the team continues to struggle during the season. This could lead to a mutually beneficial trade for both Kadri and the Flames.
Acquiring Kadri, however, wouldn’t be straightforward for the Jets. Despite the Flames missing the playoffs last season, Kadri still managed to score 29 goals and rack up 75 points. He’s a proven scorer, having surpassed the 30-goal mark twice and netting over 20 goals four additional times. His high-end skill, especially on the power play, could significantly bolster the Jets’ chances of becoming serious contenders.
Yet, there are risks involved in pursuing Kadri. He will turn 34 in October, and his contract carries a $7 million average annual value (AAV) along with a full no-movement clause for the next two seasons. After that, it transitions to a modified no-trade clause, giving him considerable control over his future. Any potential trade to Winnipeg would require Kadri’s consent.
The Jets also need to navigate their salary cap carefully, particularly with upcoming raises for key players like Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor. Ken Wiebe speculates that the Flames might consider retaining $2 million of Kadri’s salary, which would lower his cap hit to $5 million and make it easier for the Jets to fit him into their budget.
In summary, while Kadri could be an ideal fit for the Jets, the complexities of his contract and the team’s salary cap situation make this a move that requires careful consideration. The coming season will be pivotal for both Kadri and the Flames, and it remains to be seen if a trade will materialize.
