Padres Fall Short in NLDS, Facing Tough Offseason Decisions
The San Diego Padres took a 2-1 series lead in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, needing just one more win to eliminate their rivals. Unfortunately, after their Game 3 victory, the Padres didn’t score a single run, leading to an unexpected choke.
While the Dodgers deserve credit for their pitching, being shut out in two consecutive games with their season on the line is unacceptable. The Padres have a solid foundation and are likely to be competitive next season, but changes are necessary. A.J. Preller will need to part ways with several players, with Christopher Kline of FanSided identifying three free agents who won’t return in 2025.
3) Letting David Peralta Go
The David Peralta experiment went well for the Padres. Signed to a minor league deal, he excelled in the majors with a .267/.335/.414 slash line, hitting eight home runs and 28 RBI in 91 games. At 37 years old, the Padres should consider pursuing a younger player with more upside.
2) Moving On from Martin Perez
Like Peralta, the Padres received unexpected value from Martin Perez, who was acquired mid-season and posted a 3.46 ERA in 10 starts. However, given his 33 years, high home run rate, and inability to miss bats, the Padres should aim for a more reliable option in their rotation.
1) The Case Against Jurickson Profar
Jurickson Profar had a standout season after returning to San Diego on a one-year, $ 1 million deal, slashing .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs and 85 RBI. While he was crucial to the Padres’ postseason run, he’s likely to seek a significant contract elsewhere. Despite his success in San Diego, the Padres may need to invest their resources in a player with a more proven track record.
As the offseason approaches, the Padres face critical decisions that could shape their future.
