Former New Mexico State running back Star Thomas has announced his commitment to Duke from the NCAA Transfer Portal via social media this Wednesday. He is set to have a minimum of one year of remaining eligibility.
During his time with the Aggies, the Louisiana native, who attended Homer High School in Homer, Louisiana before starting his college career, demonstrated impressive performance, rushing for 1,173 yards and scoring nine touchdowns over the last two seasons. In 2023, he earned the title of second-team All-Conference USA after tallying 653 rushing yards on 112 carries, with an average of 5.8 yards per rush and four touchdowns for the year.
Prior to joining New Mexico State, Thomas spent a year at Coffeyville Community College, where he achieved notable milestones including helping Coffeyville win the 2021 KJCCC Conference Championship. Upon transferring to New Mexico State, he quickly became a key player in the team’s offense. In 2022, Thomas played in all 13 games, leading the Aggies in all-purpose yards with 669. As a sophomore, he recorded 518 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns, with five rushing and three receiving touchdowns.
In the recent season, Thomas showcased his versatility with 853 all-purpose yards, combining 653 rushing yards with 22 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed as a kickoff returner, accumulating 47 yards on three returns. Notably, New Mexico State closed the 2023 season with a commendable 10-5 record, securing a notable 31-10 victory against Auburn.
