CommitEd: Brazilian world relay super-star commits to Georgia Tech
Brazilian athlete Giovana Reis Medeiros, a finalist at the 2022 World Championships in the women’s 400m freestyle relay, will be pursuing her academic and swimming career at the Georgia Institute of Technology starting this autumn.
Under the mentorship of two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Courtney Shealy Hart, she will join the Yellow Jackets team. Currently training at the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, Medeiros specializes in sprint freestyle events.
During the 2022 World Championships, Medeiros anchored the Brazilian 400m freestyle relay team, achieving a personal best relay split of 55.26 seconds. Her contribution helped the team secure a 6th-place finish in the final with a time of 3:38.10, narrowly missing Brazil’s national record of 3:37.39 set in 2015.
In 2023, Medeiros showcased remarkable progress by achieving three personal bests at the 2023 Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale. She placed 15th in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:01.48, 20th in the 100m freestyle with a time of 56.01, and 37th in the 50m freestyle with a time of 26.91.
Medeiros’ adjusted LCM 100m freestyle time would have been the fastest for the Yellow Jackets in the previous season by just over a tenth of a second, while her adjusted 200m freestyle time of 1:46.55 would have placed her second, just behind junior Sophie Murphy who had a time of 1:46.40.
Georgia Tech’s women’s team achieved the feat of setting eight new school records in the recent season, and Medeiros’ addition promises to contribute to their ongoing success. Moving forward, Medeiros has the potential to clock some of the quickest times in the history of the Yellow Jackets’ swim team. Her adjusted 100m freestyle time would currently hold the second position in the program’s history, while her adjusted 200m freestyle time would secure the fourth spot.
