Purdue Fans Threatened With Ban From Student Section After ‘Fire Walters’ Chant Breaks Out At Basketball Game
Football has historically played second fiddle to basketball at Purdue, and that’s certainly true this year due to the dismal season the Boilermakers have had on the gridiron. Many fans are calling for head coach Ryan Walters to be fired, including some students at basketball games who’ve been warned against voicing their discontent.
The Purdue men’s basketball season officially kicked off in early November, providing a welcome reprieve for fans tired of a truly dismal football season. The situation worsened recently when the football team fell to 1-8 after suffering an embarrassing 45-0 shutout against Ohio State.
While it’s uncertain if Purdue can replicate last season’s run to the national championship game, this year’s men’s basketball journey appears to be much more enjoyable for fans compared to the struggles of the football team. The Boilermakers made progress at the end of Jeff Brohm’s six-year tenure, but they hit the reset button after he was hired away by Louisville. This led to Ryan Walters getting his first chance as a college head coach, a decision that hasn’t turned out well.
Walters finished his first season with a 4-8 record and is on track for a dismal 5-19 by the end of his second season based on the remaining schedule. Fans are understandably frustrated with the team’s performance, and even members of “The Paint Crew,” the spirited student section for basketball, chanted “Fire Walters” during a game against Northern Kentucky.
However, reports indicate they were warned not to repeat this prior to a recent game against Yale, as the approximately 3,000 members of The Paint Crew received a stern email stating they could be removed from the arena and have their membership revoked for negative chants aimed at Walters.
