Will Hudson Card or Ryan Browne get the start at quarterback for Purdue vs. No. 2 Oregon? Coach Ryan Walters provided an update on Monday?
Ryan Browne has earned the opportunity to start in Friday night’s game against No. 2 Oregon. Purdue coach Ryan Walters confirmed that the redshirt freshman will be the quarterback when the Boilermakers face the Ducks.
Browne made his first collegiate start on Saturday, nearly leading Purdue to a major comeback against Illinois. Starting in place of the injured Hudson Card (concussion protocol), Browne threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns, along with 118 rushing yards.
Despite trailing 27-3 in the third quarter, Browne orchestrated an impressive second-half comeback, giving Purdue a 43-40 advantage with less than a minute left. However, Illinois emerged victorious with a 50-49 win in overtime, improving to 5-1 while Purdue fell to 1-5.
During his weekly press conference, Walters provided an update on Card’s status while confirming Browne’s starting role this weekend. “I think the way he played (against Illinois), it would be unfair not to (start him),” Walters said.
Purdue’s season has lacked excitement so far, suffering multiple blowout losses. Although they didn’t win against Illinois, the team’s fight until the end marked a positive change for the program.
Browne’s performance has earned him the chance to start against undefeated Oregon (6-0), coming off a thrilling 32-31 win over Ohio State.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on Friday and the game will be broadcasted on FOX.
