Cincinnati Bengals Find DJ Reader Replacement, Add Offensive Weapon in Latest Seven Round 2024 NFL Mock Draft

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to significantly improve their defensive line in the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting Byron Murphy III, a defensive tackle from Texas. This addition is crucial as the Bengals lost DJ Reader, a key player on their defense, to free agency. Reader, who was ranked 11th out of 130 interior defensive linemen by Pro Football Focus in 2023, had 10 quarterback pressures, the second-most of his career. Losing him is a significant blow, but the drafting of Murphy III is expected to help fill that void. Murphy III, as a rookie, will provide a valuable and versatile presence in defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s front, particularly in the absence of Reader.

“Byron Murphy III Takes Center Stage in Cincinnati Bengals’ Seven-Round Mock Draft”

Round 1, Pick 18: Byron Murphy III, DT, Texas

The absence of DJ Reader, who was a significant contributor to the Bengals’ defense, is certainly a setback. However, the selection of Byron Murphy III, a defensive tackle from Texas, is anticipated to provide a substantial boost to the team’s defensive line. Murphy is recognized for his explosive and disruptive qualities, particularly on the interior. He is a reliable run defender, showcasing his strength and determination in this aspect of the game. Furthermore, Murphy’s quickness and sudden movements make him a formidable opponent for blockers in pass-rushing situations, enabling him to generate pressure on the quarterback. Considering the Bengals’ league-high 6.0 yards per play allowed last season, the addition of Murphy is expected to significantly enhance the team’s defensive performance.

Round 2, Pick 49: Ja’Lynn Polk, WR, Washington
Tee Higgins could be entering his last season with the Cincinnati Bengals, potentially through a trade, as the depth chart lacks significant strength beyond Ja’Marr Chase. Polk concluded the previous season with 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns.
Round 3, Pick 97: Christian Jones, OT, Texas

“Jones is a suitable candidate to grow under the guidance of Trent Brown, boasting strength and robust hand technique. With 48 career starts under his belt, Jones surrendered just one sack in the previous season, demonstrating his proficiency in pass protection”

ESPN’s projections for the Cincinnati Bengals’ remaining selections in the draft, rounds four to seven, include the following: Decamerion Richardson, a cornerback from Mississippi State (115), Dillon Johnson, a running back from Washington (149), LaDarius Henderson, a guard from Michigan (194), Evan Anderson, a defensive tackle from Florida Atlantic (214), Sam Hartman, a quarterback from Notre Dame (224), and Austin McNamara, a punter from Texas Tech (237).
