Chicago White Sox reportedly hire former Angels manager for a significant role addressing the Sox’s biggest problem

“The Chicago White Sox have hired former Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin for a role in the player development department.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today shared this information on social media:

The Chicago White Sox have made a shrewd move by hiring former Angels manager Phil Nevin as a special assistant in their player development department. He will be involved in various player development roles, including amateur scouting for the 2025 Draft.”

The White Sox are coming off a historically poor season, finishing with a record of 41-121. As they undergo this rebuild, player development will be crucial, making Nevin’s role quite significant.

In the past two years, the White Sox have seen extensive roster changes, trading or releasing Dylan Cease, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Joe Kelly, Aaron Bummer, Gregory Santos, Liam Hendriks, Jake Burger, Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez, Garrett Crochet, and Jose Abreu. They have gained substantial prospect capital through various trades, and it is the responsibility of the player development department to nurture this new talent.

The team might also consider trading Luis Robert Jr., which would further enhance their prospect pool.

Nevin managed the Los Angeles Angels for parts of two seasons (2022-2023), posting a record of 119-149 over 268 games. He was reportedly a finalist for the White Sox managerial position, which ultimately went to Will Venable.

With a 12-year playing career—most notably with the Padres—Nevin is also recognized as the former No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft, having played college baseball at Cal State-Fullerton.
