Carolina Panthers Confirms Unexpected, Heartbreaking News Ahead of Fixture

The Panthers placed rookie running back Jonathon Brooks on injured reserve Tuesday, the team announced. Brooks suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. This is the same knee in which he endured a similar injury last November while completing his final season at the University of Texas.

In response to this injury, the Panthers signed wide receiver/returner Velus Jones Jr. from the Jaguars’ practice squad. Jones, 27, was a third-round pick by the Bears out of the University of Tennessee in 2022 and has averaged 26.7 yards per kickoff return over 27 games in his three NFL seasons. The Panthers also lost returner Raheem Blackshear to a chest injury during the same game.

Additionally, Carolina announced the signing of defensive tackle Sam Roberts from its practice squad to the 53-player roster, while waiving veteran defensive end Deshawn Williams from the active roster. Roberts, a former sixth-round pick of the Patriots, joined the Panthers’ practice squad in November.

The team also made changes on their practice squad by signing veteran wide receiver Trenton Irwin and releasing Dax Milne. Irwin has spent parts of the last six seasons with the Bengals, appearing in 41 games with 46 receptions for 601 yards and five touchdowns.
