The St. Louis Cardinals have officially initiated their rebuild by trading All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Boston Red Sox. In this finalized deal, the Red Sox will receive Arenado along with $ 17 million to assist with his contract, while the Cardinals will acquire promising right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts.
Trade Details:
- Red Sox receive: Third baseman Nolan Arenado and $ 17 million
- Cardinals receive: Right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts
“In return, the Cardinals would be acquiring pitching prospect Richard Fitts. Fitts is the Red Sox’s 10th-ranked prospect,” wrote Pressnell. “The right-hander has been excellent in nearly 400 career minor-league innings. He cracked the big leagues for four starts in 2024 when he posted a sub-2.00 ERA in about 20 innings. But he had a high walk rate and a low strikeout rate, so it’s tough to judge how he’d translate over a full season.”
Richard Fitts, ranked as the Red Sox’s 10th prospect and their third-best pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has shown considerable potential. With nearly 400 career minor-league innings and a sub-2.00 ERA in four major league starts in 2024, Fitts has demonstrated his capabilities, although his high walk rate and low strikeout rate will require further evaluation.
This trade marks a significant move for both teams. Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover, and six-time Platinum Glover, will be a major asset for the Red Sox. However, his addition necessitates a shift in the infield, likely resulting in the departure of Triston Casas. This would clear first base for Rafael Devers to move over while Arenado takes his place at third base.
As the Cardinals look to offload some of their veteran players, this deal not only helps them gain a promising young arm but also alleviates some financial burden, making it a strategic move in their rebuilding efforts.
