Canucks President Opens Up About Goalie Situation

The Vancouver Canucks have two goalies dealing with injuries, but there is confidence that everything will be resolved by the start of the season.

As the Canucks approach the opening of training camp for the 2024-25 season, concerns about the health of their goaltenders have emerged. Thatcher Demko has had a slower-than-expected recovery, while Arturs Silovs missed the Olympic qualifiers due to knee inflammation.

Both Demko and Silovs are still on the path to full recovery, but Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford is optimistic about his goaltending situation.

“I feel good about our goaltending,” Rutherford said to Sportsnet. “I know our goalies are working hard and working towards being ready for the start of the season. As an organization, that’s what we’re hoping for.”

Demko recently concluded a season where he ranked second in Vezina Trophy voting, boasting a record of 35-14-2 and five shutouts. He played a significant role in leading the Canucks to a Pacific Division title and their first season with over 100 points since 2014-15.

After participating in just one postseason game, Demko was sidelined by an injury that continues to affect him. Backup Casey DeSmith also faced injury, prompting third-string goalie Silovs to step up.

Silovs performed admirably in his relief role, securing a spot as the Canucks’ backup for the 2024-25 season. However, with his own injury concerns, the Canucks are exploring options to add depth in goal.

“We evaluate every position daily,” said Rutherford. “We’re not complacent. We’re aware that we might need to acquire a goalie from waivers to fill a temporary gap.”

Rutherford also mentioned that extending a professional tryout offer to a goalie could be beneficial. The Canucks have shown interest in Kevin Lankinen and Antti Raanta.

While the Canucks remain confident in their goalies, they recognize the importance of having depth, as injuries are common, particularly among goaltenders.

“If a player gets injured working out or, in Silovs’ case, getting ready to play for his country, I can’t say that’s a surprise,” Rutherford said. “That’s just the way life works for an athlete. But I can say that both our goalies are working hard and doing what they can right now to get ready.”
