Canadiens Add Another Top Prospect to Bolster Offense

The Montreal Canadiens are aiming to build on last season’s playoff appearance and could look to strengthen their offense as they prepare for another run.

In a recent proposal from Heavy.com, the Canadiens are linked to a potential blockbuster trade that would bring Calgary Flames forward Yegor Sharangovich to Montreal.

Proposed Trade:

Canadiens receive:

  • Yegor Sharangovich

Flames receive:

  • Josh Anderson

  • Owen Beck

  • 2026 first-round pick

This deal would be a significant one, with Montreal parting with a veteran winger, a promising young center, and a valuable first-round pick to land Sharangovich. Fortunately, the Canadiens hold two second-rounders in 2026, making it easier to part with their first-round selection.

Sharangovich is about to start the first year of a five-year, $28.75 million contract and would step into a top-six role in Montreal. With the Habs finishing 22nd in scoring last season, his offensive upside could be a much-needed boost. Last year, he tallied 17 goals and 15 assists (32 points in 73 games), but he posted 31 goals and 28 assists (59 points) the season before.

For Calgary, the key return pieces would be Owen Beck and the first-round pick. Beck is projected to develop into a reliable bottom-six center and is still on an affordable entry-level deal. Anderson, included to help balance the cap, still brings value as a middle-six power forward with two years remaining on his $38.5 million contract. He had 15 goals and 12 assists over 81 games last season.

Anderson, a veteran leader in Montreal, has been the subject of trade rumors for some time. NHL analyst Jeremy Tingly recently named him a likely trade candidate, noting that GM Kent Hughes may be looking to free up cap space.

“Josh Anderson is rumored to be available, as GM Kent Hughes is trying to allocate resources and restructure his finances,” Tingly wrote. “Anderson, 31, still has two years left at $5.5 million AAV with a five-team no-trade clause, but had a down year with just 15 goals and 27 points. It’s not quite the return Montreal expected at that price point.”

While Anderson remains a strong physical presence on the ice, his production hasn’t fully matched his contract value — a factor pushing his name into trade conversations.

Even after an active offseason, GM Kent Hughes hasn’t ruled out more changes.

“My focus is more so on what we can do to build a team that’s capable of competing for the Stanley Cup,” Hughes said. “We know we won’t put together the perfect team in one summer, but there are still things we want to achieve.”

With playoff odds currently sitting at +105, the Canadiens are in a position where smart additions — like Sharangovich — could make a meaningful difference.
