Buffalo Bills reportedly confirm stance to sign veteran pass-rusher in free agency

After seeing the Philadelphia Eagles dominate upfront against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, the Buffalo Bills could be looking to upgrade their defensive line in free agency and the draft.

Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby and Trey Hendrickson are a few names to monitor via trade, but one NFL insider reported from the NFL Scouting Combine that the Bills are among three teams that have expressed a desire to sign a veteran pass-rusher who was recently released as a cap casualty.

According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, the Bills are interested in veteran Preston Smith.

Former Steelers edge rusher Preston Smith, who was released as a salary-cap casualty just a few weeks ago, is getting a lot of interest here at the combine.

Three teams, most prominently the Buffalo Bills, have expressed a desire to sign Smith once free agency begins. If it happens, it would be a great coupling, as Buffalo needs depth at pass rusher, and Smith wants to finish his career with a playoff team.

Smith, 32, was acquired by the Steelers in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick at the trade deadline in a deal with the Green Bay Packers. The veteran recorded two sacks in eight games with the Steelers and finished the season with 4.5 total between Pittsburgh and Green Bay.

In his career, Smith has recorded 70.5 sacks. His best season came in 2019 when he registered 12 sacks, but the pass rusher has recorded eight sacks or more in six of his 10 seasons in the league.

As mentioned by Pauline, Smith would be a depth signing at most. The move would be similar to what the team did last offseason when they signed veteran Dawuane Smoot, a pending free agent, to a one-year deal.
