According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers have interviewed another external candidate for their vacant special teams coordinator role, this time bringing in someone with extensive experience.

Chris Tabor has been coaching in the NFL since 2008, starting as the Chicago Bears’ assistant special teams coach through 2010. He then served as the Cleveland Browns’ special teams coordinator from 2011 to 2017 before returning to the Bears in the same role from 2018 to 2021. Most recently, Tabor spent two years as the Carolina Panthers’ special teams coordinator and briefly served as their interim head coach following the dismissal of Frank Reich. However, after a change in leadership, Tabor was not retained for the 2024 season.

In 2023, Carolina ranked 23rd in special teams DVOA but excelled in kickoff returns, finishing sixth. Under Tabor’s guidance in 2022, they performed significantly better, ranking eighth overall in special teams DVOA, third in punts, sixth in field goals and extra points, and second in “hidden points.” Hidden points estimate a team’s advantage from field position factors largely outside their control, such as opponents’ field goal attempts and kick distances.

The 49ers, who ranked 30th in hidden points last season, could benefit from Tabor’s expertise. His strong track record in improving special teams efficiency makes him a logical candidate for the position.
