Most coaches who are astute often utilize the media to convey messages aimed at motivating their players or making a point to the team.
This morning, Bucs coach Todd Bowles appeared to do just that.
Throughout the offseason and into training camp, the Buccaneers have emphasized the need to enhance their run game, which has been a significant focus during the preseason.
Joe is hopeful for improvement, as the Bucs ranked last in rushing performance over the past two seasons. Continuing this trend for a third year would be unacceptable.
Thus, why not leverage all available methods, including direct and indirect communications through the media?
In his press conference following last night’s game, Bowles was asked about the run game. While discussing players Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker, he made a pointed remark about the team’s previous struggles in rushing.
“The key is they’re running downhill,” Bowles noted regarding Irving and Tucker’s performance in the preseason victory against the Bengals. “No one is hesitating back there like before.”
He added that they are better at recognizing holes and have matured, particularly Sean, while praising Bucky’s natural running ability.
Last year, Joe pointed out that Rachaad White had opportunities to exploit gaps but often failed to do so. Whenever he raised this issue, some commenters reacted defensively.
Bowles’ acknowledgment of these issues aligns with Joe’s observations from last season.
It’s also encouraging for Joe to see Bowles express frustration with the team’s poor rushing performance. If public comments are what it takes to motivate players, then that approach is justified.
