BREAKING: Wild make new contract decision with goalie Marc-Andre Fleury

The Minnesota Wild have agreed to a one-year contract extension with goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who is set to return for his 21st NHL season. Fleury, who was the first overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, has had a successful career with three Stanley Cup victories and numerous awards.

He is currently second in the NHL’s all-time wins list and is aiming to widen the gap between him and Patrick Roy. Fleury’s contract with the Wild is worth $2.5 million and includes a full no-move clause.

Marc-Andre Fleury, a veteran goaltender, has had a successful career with multiple Stanley Cup victories and a Vezina Trophy. He has played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, and Minnesota Wild. Fleury’s time in Pittsburgh was particularly fruitful, as he helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 2009 and played a crucial role in their championship wins in 2016 and 2017.

Fleury’s performance has declined in recent years, and he has not been a full-time starting goaltender since his time with the Golden Knights. He has served as a backup to Filip Gustavsson in Minnesota, where he signed a two-year extension in 2022.

However, Fleury’s performance this season has been worse than in previous years, with a .895 SV% and 2.98 GAA in 35 starts. The Wild’s decision to extend Fleury’s contract for another year has raised questions about the team’s goaltending situation.

It is unclear whether the team plans to trade Gustavsson or believes that top goaltending prospect Jesper Wallstedt is not yet ready for full-time NHL duties. Fleury’s extension also means that the Wild will have limited cap space for free agency in the offseason, which could impact their ability to add players and improve the team.Overall, Fleury’s career has been marked by success and longevity, and his contributions to the game of hockey have been significant.

However, his declining performance in recent years and the Wild’s decision to extend his contract have raised questions about the team’s goaltending situation and their ability to add talent in the offseason.
