Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles have been busy in the transfer portal this offseason but had yet to land any slot wide receivers. That has now changed, as a former SEC starting slot receiver pledged his services to Florida State today.
Marquarius “Squirrel” White is a 5’10”, 170-pound wide receiver originally from Pinson, Alabama. He will have one year of eligibility remaining. FSU was able to hold off numerous power conference programs to land White.
White signed with the Tennessee Volunteers out of high school, quickly making a name for himself by catching 30 balls for 481 yards (an average of 16 yards per catch) and three touchdowns in a rotational role. He started the final two of 12 games that year. Current FSU transfer commits Jayson Jenkins and Elijah Herring were also part of that Tennessee signing class.
2023 was Squirrel’s breakout campaign, seeing him notch 67 receptions for 803 yards (12 YPC) and two touchdowns, leading the Volunteers wideouts in a feature role. He started all 13 contests at the slot receiver position and had three games with 100+ yards.
In 2024, he dealt with shoulder and arm injuries and a much deeper receiver rotation but still started 10 of 13 games and caught 34 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns, good for second on the team. He also served as a punt returner, tallying seven returns for 112 yards. He is expected to be fully healthy for the 2025 campaign despite hurting a knee in Tennessee’s playoff loss to Ohio State.
White will now fight for a starting role at FSU under new wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. His 36 games of experience in the SEC should prove valuable. He is a dangerous weapon at the slot position but can also line up out wide and may also factor into the punt returner conversation.
White has elite speed (ran a 10.68-second 100 and 21.58-second 200 to secure runner-up finishes in the state championship meet in high school and hit 23.4 miles per hour on Tennessee’s Catapult GPS trackers) and has outstanding toughness for his smaller size. He also became a father in 2024, helping him further mature.
