Just in, WKU head coach Tyson Helton drops heartbreaking update on starting quarterback TJ Finley lower leg injury

The Texas State transfer sustained a leg injury during the game against Middle Tennessee this week.

On Monday, Western Kentucky head coach Tyson Helton announced that starting quarterback TJ Finley will be sidelined for several weeks due to a lower leg injury. Caden Veltkamp will take over as the starter for the Hilltoppers in their week four matchup against Toledo.

In three games this season, Finley has completed 48 of 75 passes for 490 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He did not return after the first drive in this weekend’s 49-21 victory over Middle Tennessee.

Veltkamp, who was recognized as Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for his impressive performance, completed 27 of 30 passes for 398 yards and five touchdowns, helping the Hilltoppers achieve their first conference win of the season.

The Hilltoppers are confident in Veltkamp’s abilities, having witnessed him lead Western Kentucky to a victory over Old Dominion last season in the Famous Toastery Bowl. This season, Veltkamp has played in two games, throwing for 409 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Western Kentucky will face Toledo, who is also coming off a significant 41-17 win over Mississippi State. The matchup will take place at 7 PM ET on Saturday, broadcast on ESPN+.
