Virginia Tech Faces Depth Issues After Injury to Jalen Stroman Against Vanderbilt
The Virginia Tech Hokies suffered a loss on the field as well as a significant hit to their depth chart following their 34-27 overtime defeat to Vanderbilt on Saturday. Head coach Brent Pry announced on Tuesday that safety Jalen Stroman will be sidelined for a few weeks due to an undisclosed injury.
Before Pry’s media briefing, the Hokies released their depth chart, which notably lacked Stroman after he exited the game against the Commodores. In anticipation of their matchup against Marshall, Jaylen Jones and Mose Phillips will now take over his responsibilities, with freshmen Quentin Reddish and Devin Alves backing them up.
Stroman’s absence is significant for a defense that struggled to contain Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who utilized both his passing and running abilities to secure the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
On a positive note, Phillips performed well in Stroman’s stead, and Jones will now carry more responsibility in replacing the veteran.
Additional changes to Virginia Tech’s depth chart for their home opener against Marshall include Keli Lawson moving to will linebacker and Jaden Keller shifting to backup mike behind Sam Brumfield. Caleb Woodson transitions from backup star to the will position behind Lawson, while Miami transfer Kaleb Spencer steps in as the backup star.
Offensively, Nick Gallo is no longer listed as a tight end, with Caleb Nitta taking the backup center position. The good news for the Hokies is that Kyron Drones, who faced challenges during the final drive and had limited play in overtime, is still named the starter, with Colin Schlee as the backup.
