The name is likely recognizable to longtime fans of UNC basketball. It seems that Obinna Ekezie Jr., a prominent big man from Prolific Prep (California) and the son of a starting center from the late 1990s at Maryland, has caught the eye of Hubert Davis and the other former Tar Heel players on his coaching staff.
On Thursday evening, the 7-foot, 220-pound sophomore shared with HS Top Recruits that UNC is among four prominent programs that have visited his school since the open recruiting period commenced earlier this month. The other three schools he mentioned are Kansas, UCLA, and Kentucky.
Kentucky’s interest has progressed to an official offer from new Wildcats head coach Mark Pope and his staff. Additionally, Ekezie has received early offers from Arizona State, Cal, Houston, and Stanford.

He is currently ranked No. 19 overall and No. 4 among true centers in the 2027 ESPN 25. In contrast, On3 holds Obinna Ekezie Jr. in higher regard, ranking him at No. 4 overall and No. 1 at his position.
“I’m a strong shot blocker,” Ekezie shared with On3’s Jamie Shaw. “I run the floor effectively, can pass from the post, and have some ability to shoot mid-range. I’m focusing on improving my communication, developing my understanding of the game, playing through my teammates, and setting screens to create opportunities. It’s all about those small details.
“I admire Nikola Jokic a lot. His patience with the ball and his ability to read defenses while making decisions from the post are impressive.”
