The latest university to target a GM role is the North Carolina Tar Heels and their basketball program under the leadership of head coach Hubert Davis.
The general manager role in the world of college athletics has a myriad of responsibilities but a number of them focus around the world of NIL, which has boomed into a full-fledged business in college athletics.
To help handle this, North Carolina is reportedly targeting prominent sports agent Jim Tanner for the GM as reported by Joe Tipton of On3.

Jim Tanner is the President of Tandem Sports and is authorized to represent NBA and WNBA athletes giving him incredibly relevant exposure to navigating NIL deals and managing players. He also has ties to North Carolina as he was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1990.
This news comes as head coach Hubert Davis recently expressed his thoughts that operating under the old model wasn’t sustainable for success. Due to that, he unveiled his plans to expand his staff and bring in a GM.
