Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly interested in bringing Boston Bruins forward & free agent target – Reports

The former Boston Bruins forward is interested in signing a long-term contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs

For the Boston Bruins and general manager Don Sweeney, the summer of 2024 could be a turning point in team history. With so many contracts coming off the books, he has a ton of cap space, and Bruins supporters have been looking forward to this offseason for a while.

Priority number one for Sweeney this offseason should be a top-six center. The Black and Gold’s general manager can also try to add a defenseman and a goal-scoring wing as needed. If Sweeney does become a free agent, he should definitely look into former Bruin Tyler Bertuzzi. But it seems like the club he was a part of this season might prevent that from happening.

According to reports, Tyler Bertuzzi is really interested in rejoining the Toronto Maple Leafs

At the 2023 trade deadline, Boston acquired Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings. What a valuable addition he proved to be in the latter stages of the season and during the playoffs. Despite being one of the better Bruins playoff players in their series against the Florida Panthers, he ultimately left and signed a $5.5 million contract with the Maple Leafs last summer due to a very tight cap.

Bertuzzi and Toronto would prefer to finalize a long-term deal so as to prevent him from becoming a free agent, according to NHL source Pierre LeBrun.

“We’ll see what happens here. He’s been a top player on the last three teams he’s played with. He’s played on the first line with the best players on each of his last three teams. So he would be coveted on the open market.”

LeBrun is correct; if Bertuzzi were to become available, a number of teams would be interested in signing him, and Boston ought to consider entering the race. However, Toronto appears to want not to have him signed before July 1.
