Victor Wembanyama caused quite a stir (and perhaps a few frights) last year when he dressed as Slenderman, utilizing his 7-foot-3 stature to create an eerie presence before a Halloween game in Phoenix. For his second season Halloween costume, the San Antonio Spurs player transitioned from a creepypasta legend to a character from Studio Ghibli. Before the team’s away game against the Utah Jazz, Wembanyama wore the black cloak and iconic white mask of No-Face, the spectral figure from the 2001 animated film “Spirited Away.”
Considering Wembanyama’s well-known interests in pop culture, from “Star Wars” to fantasy literature, it’s easy to see why he chose to dress up as this whimsical character this year. Most Spurs fans appreciated Wembanyama’s costume, with one X (formerly Twitter) user declaring that his “Halloween game is unmatched.” Spurs power forward Sandi Mamukelashvili opted for a more intimidating look for Halloween, possibly to set the mood before their match against the Jazz.
This strategy paid off, as the Spurs won 106-88, aided by Wembanyama’s impressive second career 5×5 game, where he scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out seven assists, and recorded five blocks and five steals. Mamukelashvili contributed with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. San Antonio’s record now stands at 2-3 for the season.
