Outside linebacker Brian Burns informed NJ Advance Media that he underwent additional imaging after aggravating his groin injury during the Giants’ home defeat to the Eagles, which ended 28-3. Burns, 26, limped off the field midway through the third quarter, just before an Eagles touchdown increased their lead to 21-3, due to ongoing discomfort from his injury, but he returned to the game shortly after.
When pressed for more information, Burns remained tight-lipped, replying with “We’ll see” when asked if he would appear on this week’s injury report. Moments later, during a media scrum, he was coy about his physical condition, saying, “I’m good. I’m all right.”
All of this might just be a precaution. Burns, who has performed well in recent weeks, was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game and didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday (but did participate in Friday’s practice, albeit in a limited capacity). He mentioned on Wednesday that he intended to play against the Eagles—and he did—before getting injured in the third quarter. This past offseason, the Giants traded their 39th overall draft pick to Carolina for Burns, signing him to a three-year, $90 million contract. Last week, they lost outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux to wrist surgery, placing him on injured reserve for at least four games. This week, they also lost all-pro left tackle Andrew Thomas to a season-ending foot injury that required surgery.
The loss of Thomas is particularly significant for the Giants. If Burns has to sit out for an extended period, it would be a major setback as well. Currently at 2-5 following their disappointing performance against the Eagles, the Giants have some extra time to prepare for their next game—next Monday night against the Steelers.
