As the Seattle Mariners aim to remain contenders in the American League West Division, they’re counting on Cal Raleigh to play a key role in pushing them toward a postseason berth.

While it may be a bit soon to focus on playoff positioning, Seattle will need more than just Raleigh to turn that goal into reality. The Mariners dropped from No. 11 to No. 13 in The Athletic’s latest MLB Power Rankings.

What’s going on with the Seattle Mariners right now? Grant Brisbee of The Athletic provides a broader perspective on where the team stands at this point in the season.

According to Brisbee, the Mariners did little in the offseason to fix their struggling offense, adding only Donovan Solano, Miles Mastrobuoni, and not much else. The most notable acquisition may have been Rowdy Tellez—both literally and figuratively—but he’s already been designated for assignment.

One of the biggest reasons Seattle is still in the playoff mix is Cal Raleigh’s outstanding season. Known to fans as “Big Dumper,” Raleigh is having a breakout year, defying expectations with a massive power surge. As Brisbee puts it, his offensive performance is practically carrying the team and keeping them competitive in the AL West.

Still, Raleigh can’t do it all. Seattle needs more consistent production from the rest of the lineup, including players like J.P. Crawford, to truly contend. Raleigh is currently batting .278 with 32 home runs and 68 RBIs, but the offense continues to revolve around him too heavily.

Tellez was expected to be a power bat in the lineup, but that plan clearly fell through. The Mariners jumped out to an early division lead this season, only to lose ground after a rough stretch. Now, the Houston Astros are back on top of the AL West.

To keep up, manager Dan Wilson must find a way to field a more effective lineup on a daily basis. If Seattle wants to stay in the race, it’s going to require a full-team effort moving forward.
