BREAKING: Seahawks’ GM, HC Discuss Byron Murphy Pick

Before the draft, the Seahawks identified guard as their top priority. They had their eyes set on JC Latham from Alabama, envisioning him as a strong addition to their offensive line.

Unfortunately, Latham was picked by the Titans at No. 7. The Seahawks shifted their focus to selecting Byron Murphy II, a talented defensive tackle from Texas, with the 16th pick. Despite receiving trade offers from several teams looking to move up in the draft, the Seahawks ultimately chose to stick with the pick and select Murphy due to his high value and potential impact on their defense.

Although tempted to trade back and acquire more draft picks, the Seahawks decided to stay put and draft Murphy because of his exceptional skills and fit within their defensive scheme. The coaching staff praised Murphy for his versatility, aggressiveness, and ability to disrupt plays. Despite having a surplus of defensive linemen on the roster and facing salary cap constraints, the Seahawks do not currently plan to trade any defensive players. The team aims to utilize a rotation system under their new head coach, intending to keep their players fresh throughout the games.

In other team news, outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu is expected to return for training camp after missing the latter part of the 2023 season due to injury. Nwosu, who signed a contract extension through 2026, is a key player for the Seahawks’ defense and is anticipated to make a significant impact upon his return.
